Navigating Customer Feedback: Turning Bad Reviews into Business Opportunities
At Norton Supply, we understand that every business encounters occasional challenges, and receiving a negative review is an inevitable part of the journey. In this blog, we'll explore effective strategies for business owners facing their first bad review and shed light on how Norton Supply prioritizes customer satisfaction.
Understanding the Customer Perspective:
Before responding to a negative review, put yourself in the customer's shoes. Consider why they might have shared their dissatisfaction. Empathy is key to constructively addressing their concerns. Whether the issue is rational or not, there's usually room for improvement and resolution.
Proactive Problem Solving:
Evaluate the customer's reasoning behind the negative review. Is there a genuine problem or issue that needs attention? If so, brainstorm proactive solutions before reaching out to the customer. This could involve refining services or adjusting customer care policies to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Key Points to Address:
Service and Policy Enhancement: Take steps to fix any underlying service or policy issues that led to the problem.
Effective Communication: Reach out to the customer through various platforms, such as your website, Google, Yelp, or Amazon. Practice clear and positive communication, detailing the steps you're taking to resolve their concerns.
Maintain Professionalism: In the face of snarky or rude comments, resist the urge to retaliate. Respond with professionalism, showcasing your commitment to resolving issues and maintaining a positive business image.
Expect and Dilute Negative Reviews: Acknowledge that negative reviews are inevitable. Counterbalance them by actively encouraging positive reviews from satisfied customers. Promote customer testimonials to highlight your commitment to excellence.

]]>Customer reviews on social media sites such as Facebook or Yelp can either greatly benefit or severely harm your business. Although you can’t control what customers say about your coin laundry, you can control how you respond, which will affect your company’s reputation. You can also make a sincere effort to get better reviews. Keep reading to learn what to do when you get a bad review, as well as how to encourage positive customer feedback.
The first thing you should do after receiving negative feedback on one of your social media pages is to respond as soon as possible. A fast response shows that your business cares about the satisfaction of its customers.
So how do you respond to an unhappy customer? Always apologize and restate their complaint, then discuss how you plan to resolve the issue. For example, if they were unhappy that the soap vending machine wasn’t working when they visited your coin laundry, let them know you’re having your maintenance team make the necessary fixes immediately.
Never respond with the first thought that comes to mind, as it’s usually not the most mature or professional. Take the time to craft a clear, short, understanding, and positive response. Be sure to provide your contact information because if they’d like to continue the conversation it’s best to do so over the phone. This also shows excellent customer service.
One last important tip - don’t take responding to an upset customer as an opportunity to state your case. If a customer didn’t have a good experience, making excuses or justifying your stance isn’t the best approach. Instead, assume responsibility for your mistakes and work to come up with a resolution. Keep in mind that many customers will go back and change their negative review if it’s met with an understanding response and a speedy resolution.
The most obvious step you can make toward getting better reviews on social networks is to provide exceptional service. Give your customers something to rave about, not something to rant about. Make your coin laundromat stand out from your competitors. Your service needs to be worth their effort to go and leave the review.
Research shows that 86% of customers will pay more money for a better customer experience. You can improve your customer experience in many different ways. More and more coin laundromats are choosing to provide free Wi-Fi for their customers’ convenience, and air conditioning for their comfort.
In addition to enhancing the customer experience, it’s completely acceptable to ask your customers for honest reviews. Post signs or window stickers around your store that direct customers to your social media pages. You can even provide an incentive to motivate them, like one free wash cycle if they submit a review!
SEE ALSO: IS FREE DRYING A COST-EFFECTIVE WAY TO DELIGHT YOUR CUSTOMER BASE?
In this digital age, many customers look to online reviews to help them make a decision on where to spend their money. By resolving negative reviews, improving your customer experience, and encouraging positive reviews, you can make your coin laundry more successful and more profitable.
]]>“There is no such thing as free in business.”
Handing out a free drying promotion isn’t inherently good or bad. In fact, laundromat promotions are normally bathed in a positive light. However, the efficacy and ethics of free drying depend entirely on how it’s positioned in the minds of your customers. If your store’s drying department is truly free, it’s not cost-effective unless you’re recovering the cost somewhere else. Conversely, when it is cost-effective, it’s likely to be falsely characterized. When laundromats advertise “free-dry” (eagerly shouting it from the rooftops) what they’re most likely saying is “we’ve incorporated the cost of drying into the washing price or have devised some other means of recovering the cost.”
Although charitable at first glance, in actuality a laundry is no different from any other business. Revenues must exceed costs in order for the business to achieve any semblance of growth and stability. A drying department is half of the revenue stream. Discarding it under the guise of a free a offer is simply not a tenable practice to hike your bottom line.
With that said, some laundries fully disclose their free dry model to their customers with great success. One way to pull this off is to implement a point system where customers receive “dryer-points” upon the purchase of a wash cycle. The amount of points earned is contingent upon the size of the washer. The price of drying is assimilated into the price of washing. This gives customers the impression that they’re receiving a free service, advertises it in a transparent and scrupulous manner, and keeps the operation cost-effective.
Free drying is a highly contentious topic amongst industry actors, primarily because it’s frequently advertised in a deceitful way. However, if you’ve implemented a free drying system that has yielded positive feedback from customers, whether it be a one-off promotion or a long-standing practice, stay on that course. It’s far better to be synchronized with what works for your customers than to heedlessly follow business maxims.
The moral of the free dry promotion is this: don’t proclaim anything as free unless you wholeheartedly mean it. If you want to go down the free dry path, let your customers know exactly what you’re up to. They’ll appreciate the honesty and honor your sound business ethics. If you’re still unsure about the merits of free drying offerings, scout your competition to see if it would distinguish you from the hamper of other laundromats in the area.

You woke up on the right side of the bed. Your finger managed to stay clear of the snooze button. You treated yourself to a hearty breakfast, fully prepared to take the day by storm. And then, as you maneuvered your vehicle through rush-hour traffic, it happened. The dreaded coffee spill. Time slowed as you watched the muddy-brown droplets make contact with your pristine, white shirt. The day had been soiled.
The ironic part? You were on your way to open the doors of your newly minted laundromat and still don’t have a clue how you should address your coffee-spotted shirt. The plot thickens.
Operating a successful laundromat takes more than offering competitive prices and the latest, greatest laundry supplies (although that's a huge part of it). It's about helping your customers solve problems they face on a daily basis. When a customer approaches you and asks how to remove a certain species of stain, you should be ready to rhapsodize about the many ways they can wash their stains away.
Here are eight of the most common stains you'll come across and how to combat them with common household items. Note: Every one of these stain remedies is more effective the earlier the stain is addressed and requires laundering after its application.
Coffee < Baking Soda
Sipping back a cup of joe has become a ubiquitous habit of the working world. Couple a brimming cup of coffee with a bumpy road and it’s all but game over. Unless, that is, you have access to baking soda. Sprinkle some baking soda over the stain and soak it in a clean coffee mug, or other vessel, with hot water. Scrub the stain thoroughly as it’s drenching in the water and baking soda mixture. Repeat if necessary.
Ink < Milk
Ink stains can sneak up on you when you least expect it. They hardly ever happen with a pen in hand. Instead, forgotten pens wait in pockets for their big moment in the washer or dryer. We’ve all been there, it’s a day-ruiner. If you’re confronted with an ink stain, prescribe an overnight milk bath for the afflicted item of clothing. After its overnight soak, it’s ready for the washer.
Grass < Vinegar
Grass smudges are the necessary evils of toddlers playing in the backyard, a casual pick-up football game, or misstepping in the garden. They happen to the best of us. So instead of futily buffing them out with a washcloth and water, apply some vinegar and scrub the green clean.
Red Wine < White Wine
Next time you’re at a dinner party and need some emergency red wine removal tactic, head back to the liquor shelf, grab a bottle of white wine and club soda. Gently apply the mixture to the scene of the stain with a cloth. Put it through the typical laundering process once thoroughly soaked.
Grease < Soda
Grease stains are among the most difficult and frustrating stains of them all. Once a grease stain plants its roots, it’s near impossible to get the original coloring of your clothing back. Fear not. Procure a can of Coca Cola and soak the grease stain in it while scrubbing. Trace amounts of carbonic and phosphoric acids present in the Coke will eradicate the grease and leave your clothes looking good as new.
Sweat < Lemons
While these stains don’t afflict everyone, those who frequent the gym or spend time on the track are all too familiar with the off-coloring effects of sweat stains. To treat them, mix an equal volume of lemon juice and water together into one solvent and vigorously scrub the affected areas.
Oil < Chalk
Oil stains are up there with grease stains on the food chain of impossibly problematic stains to remove. Try to catch the stain when it’s still fresh and hasn’t fully permeated the garment yet. Blot as much of the oil off with paper towel as possible and find a stick of white, blackboard chalk. Press deeply and stroke the stain from its center to its borders until fully covered. Throw it in your next load of laundry once completely covered.
Blood < WD-40
If your favorite t-shirt has suffered a blood stain (yikes!), don’t fret, WD-40 can erase it. Simply spread the blemished area of fabric out, careful to not overstretch it, and spray it down for three to five seconds. Rinse the WD-40 off afterwards and wash the article of clothing in your next laundry load.
In some cases, arming yourself with expertise can be just as handy as an arsenal of laundry supplies. A thorough understanding of stain antidotes can save your customers time, stress, and give them new, preventative measures to use in future clothing crises. Don’t let a stain on an outfit stain an entire day.

HE laundry detergents and HE washing machines were developed and engineered to work together. How come you can only use HE detergent with an HE washer? HE washing machines operate very differently than standard washers, so they require a special kind of soap in order to wash clothes effectively.
HE laundry detergent is a unique kind of detergent designed and produced specifically for HE washing machines. “HE” stands for high efficiency and it designates a washing machine that is made to reduce the amount of water and energy used in each load of laundry.
Why Use HE Laundry Detergent?
The American Cleaning Institute reported that HE washing machines typically use less than 66 percent of the amount of water used in the average washer. Because there is much less water in the wash and rinse cycles, the amount of laundry detergent needed to get the job done right varies greatly.
The high efficiency laundry system is becoming more and more popular among coin laundromats and commercial laundries because it significantly reduces business expenses. This also means there’s been a rise in the sales of HE laundry detergents.
This special kind of laundry detergent is ideal for the low-water volume of HE washers because it’s formulated to produce much less suds than regular detergent. Too many suds in an HE washer can prevent it from properly tumbling soiled garments, meaning they won’t get as clean. Excess suds also cause machine malfunctions that damage the condition of an HE washer.
The extra suds may even overflow from the machine and ruin its electronic system! Too many commercial laundry owners have experienced the frustrating problem of having to perform expensive maintenance and extreme cleanup after the wrong detergent was used in an HE machine.
HE detergent also disperses very quickly, meaning that it comes into contact with all of the clothes despite the low-water level. If you don’t use an HE detergent with an HE washer, it’s very likely that clothes won’t be rinsed efficiently and soils will be re-deposited onto the already cleaned laundry in the machine. Mold can also easily form inside a machine because of this problem.
Looking for HE bulk laundry detergent? Norton Supply carries a wide variety of commercial laundry detergent options that are effective and affordable. Now you can enjoy the benefits of using an HE washer without having to worry about damaging it.
You can tell if a detergent is safe to use in an HE washer if it has the blue HE symbol on its label. Some people believe that because an HE washer uses less water, they should put less detergent into the machine. This is a myth!
You should always use the correct, suggested amount of HE detergent as listed on the detergent’s instruction label. Now that you know what HE laundry detergent is, how to use it, and why it’s important, you can enjoy the convenience of saving water and energy costs in your coin laundromat or commercial laundry.

Working in the Laundry and Dry Cleaning industry it is not often we get the spotlight of media or popular culture. Cleaning dirty laundry is viewed as a necessary evil in many people’s eyes. For some of us though we choose to make a living from providing service to our customers.
Occasionally, our services are highlighted in the media whether it is through a movie that has a scene in a laundromat or a sitcom character that must go to the laundromat for the first time. We do get shout-outs once in awhile.
One of our newest and probably most popular shout-outs was down Sunday night during the Super Bowl. Whether you saw the video or not I hope you will get a kick out of it. This is not how all dry cleaners work but apperently in Gonks Cleaners this is how it works.
We thank Tide for taking or industry to the Super Bowl. Buyer beware if you go to Gronks Cleaners.
]]>We have compiled a list of 5 best practices for you and your website:
1. Give visitors some breathing room:
White space on your page is a good thing. Too much clutter and information is overwhelming to customers. This is called managing the white space. The more spaced out content is allows for more focus on content. If you have a lot of graphics, calls-to-action, links, and menu options clutter is created. It is best to limit these types of clutter. Use them tastefully however. Also, keep paragraphs short and to the point. Along with managing the white space, content should be readable. Choose font style and size wisely.
Website on the left is an example of a lot of clutter. The website on the right demonstrates white space.
2. Your website must be mobile friendly (responsive):
Is your site mobile friendly? This is what we call a responsive site. A responsive site responds to whatever device the user is accessing your site through. In a responsive site content like text, images, and videos changes size to accommodate different device screens. Think about the content on your site being like water. Water is able to form any shape it is poured into. Your site's content needs to follow this principle.
The fact that over 50% of Americans have smartphones should be enough to make you consider a responsive site. More and more customers will be searching for you on their mobile phones. Creating ease of access to your site is key to satisfying existing customer or attract new ones. If you have a website your customers should have access to it no matter their device.
3. Make your site easy to navigate:
There is an art to making your sight navigable. It starts with a simple well placed menu. The menu does not need to be fixed to the top of a page it just needs to be simple. Do not confuse users with a complex menu. After the menu and heading it is beneficial to give the readers subheadings to make skimming easy. Making your site skimmable and navigable are vital for today's viewers. Here are a few additional tips for doing this:
4. Use visuals to enhance content and readability:
It is true that a photo is worth a thousands words. Well I would say a good photo is worth a thousand words. Using visuals effectively in a website will enhance the readability. A well placed photo can be used to break-up text and help you manage the white space. Refrain from irrelevant images.
5. Keep information current and relevant:
Maintaining relevance throughout content and up-to-date information is essential to any site. So things like updating hours of operation are important. A working up-to-date direction widget and updated testimonials in your website are also really relevant. Testimonials are a very powerful, yet underutilized, internet marketing tool that helps businesses build credibility, alleviate concerns, and convert viewers to customers. If your website is out of date and you keep website development in house it may be worth reconsidering your approach.
Summary:
The key question you should ask yourself after this blog is: What do I want my website too achieve and how? Think about it. Put some time into this question. I am sure the return on investment will prove time well spent. I hope that this may help you develop a stunning new age website for your customers.

Laundry Fires Part 1: Dryer Fires
What would be the worst thing to happen to your belongings while doing the laundry? Most people would say clothes shrinking and or colors running. However, there are some worse disasters that can occur during the drying stage of laundry. A particularly common laundry disaster is a dryer fire. There is an estimated 15,500 fires and over $100,000,000 per year in damages as a result of dryer fires. In many cases these fires can be prevented.
What is a dryer fire?
A dryer fire is simply a fire that is started as a result of a drying machine. Dryer fires are one of the most common causes of household fires. Surprisingly, dryer fires are less common in laundromats and commercial applications.
What are the Common Causes?
One of the main causes of dryer fires results from your dryer exhaust vent filling with lint. The lint that sneaks by your dryer's filter starts to line the walls of the exhaust tube. The lint can block the flow of air, causing excessive heat build-up, and result in a fire.
The best ways to prevent this type of fire is by replacing the accordion style exhaust duct with a fixed exhaust tube. A fixed tube is significantly easier to clean and maintain. If that is not an option cleaning the exhaust duct every 3 months is huge for dryer fire prevention. Making sure the vent outside is clear of obstruction is equally as important for prevention. There are many tools availible to clean the exhaust tube. There are some commercial options and do it yourself options for cleaning your exhaust tube and vent.
The second most common cause of a dryer fire takes place within the machine itself. This cause is also related to lint build up. Lint is supposed to be stopped by the lint filter during the drying process. If the lint filter is not properly cleaned before every load the lint will build up on the filter. The build up causes the dryer to overheat because it cannot vent properly. Which leads to heat above the flashpoint of the lint and a fire can began.
This cause can be easily prevented by removing the lint off of the filter before each load of laundry. It is also suggested to keep the load size at a manageable level to reduce the amount of lint that is trapped with every load. The larger the load the more lint will be trapped and the potential for a fire is higher. Below, there is a video that demonstrates a good lint removal technique.
In summary, it is easy to take preemptive measures to avoid dryer fires from being an issue. Clean the lint trap upon every load to avoid excessive lint build up. Never operate the dryer without the lint trap. Also, every 3 months clean out the exhaust duct. Following these preemptive measures will allow your dryers to function correctly and more efficiently and most importantly prevent fires.

We often think about how we can help our business owners make more profit. An easy and effective way is to change some of your out dated pricing. The cost of products to your business has increased in the past years so why shouldn't it increase for your customers?
Let's assume your laundry machines average 10 soap vends per day. If you increased each vend by 25 cents, your normal operations could generate an additional $900 a year. Changing the pricing in a laundromat is often necessary to keep up with the fluctuations of day to day costs. Most laundromats use an 8 slot coin chute for up to $2 pricing or a 5 slot coin chute for up to $1.25. If you use a Greenwald V5 Coin Chute or a Greenwald V8 Coin Chute you are in luck. These are very easy to make price changes with.
In this video, Chuck shows us how to change the price on a Greenwald V5 coin slide. Also, Gold Coin Laundry demonstrate a V8 Coin slide.
These easy to follow videos will give you the confidence to go ahead and change your own price settings. Use it, share it and make more money. The Greenwald Coin Chutes make it easy to change pricing and generate more profits. Prices always seem to be trending up, and to be able to stay in sync with those increases we need the ability to change prices on the fly. It is more important than ever to remain profitable on all the items you sell in your store, including the vended items.

]]>Offering customers free Wi-Fi in your coin laundromat is an excellent way to keep them coming back and to attract new customers. Free internet adds to the convenience of your establishment and will set you apart from the competition in a unique way. There are a couple things to consider before installing free Wi-Fi at your coin laundry. In this blog post we’ll discuss the best practices of providing free Wi-Fi.
Setting up free Wi-Fi in your coin laundromat isn’t difficult, but you have to make sure you choose the right equipment. You will need to purchase a quality router along with an Internet service package that has enough bandwidth to support all of your customers. Not all plans are meant to support multiple users at once.
Your service plan should also be able to provide fast load speeds, because free Wi-Fi is useless to your customers if it’s not reliable. How much will all of this cost? It’s difficult to provide an estimate because prices vary by location. To find out, contact your local service providers and they will help you find the best package for your needs.
To ensure you’re getting the best deal, we recommend calling around town and comparing prices. The providers will ask you how many customers you expect to be using the internet at any given time, so you should be prepared to answer this question. This information will ultimately determine which plan you will need.
It’s a sad truth that some of your customers will try to use your free Wi-Fi to access websites containing pornography or illegally downloadable movies and music. It’s not uncommon for business owners who provide internet access to receive legal notices stating that they are responsible for illegally downloaded content.
There are steps you can take to minimize this threat. When you first set it up, you can manually configure your router to restrict any dangerous websites using parental controls. Using this feature you can select specific types of sites that you don’t want your customers to have access to.
If after setting up and testing these restrictions you’d still like more protection, consider using a content filtering system like OpenDNS for added security. This service can be configured with your router to block porn sites as well as sites with illegal downloads.
Some coin laundry owners have found that since they started providing free Wi-Fi to their customers, they’ve encountered an increasing loitering problem in and around their stores. A simple and effective remedy to the issue of so-called “Wi-Fi squatters” is to limit the amount of time each user can spend online.
Using a device called a “hotspot gateway” you can virtually kick people off the network when their time limit expires, whether you want that to be 30 minutes or two hours. A hotspot gateway will further help you manage access to your network, and there are a number of hotspot gateway manufacturers on the internet.
